under the gun (せかされる)

Those historically low mortgage rates suddenly on the rise tonight.
The average rate in a 30-year fixed mortgage now at that 4.51%, a two-year high.
If it was just more than six months ago, it was 3.31%.
Why the spike in mortgage rates? Well, the economy overall is actually doing better.
So, the Ed will likely start doing less to help move the recovery along, buying fewer Treasury bonds, which had been keeping mortgage rates low, which is why Lisa Handler is on the hunt in Atlanta tonight. We were taking our time, and now we're kind of under the gun. I just got off the phone with one economist.
In fact, he told me this will no doubt push many prospective buyers into the market at least in the short term, Diane. This is not expected to stall the market.
No. In fact, economists say once the housing recovery begins, it's going to keep going.

war game(軍事演習)

Tonight, many eyes are trained on Iran and a new buildup of forces by the US military in and around the Persian Gulf, moving ships and fighter jets to keep open the Strait of Hormuz; of course a crucial shipping route for a fifth of the world's oil. It clearly shows concern on the part of the US. All Iran would have to do is lay a few mines or even just say theywere laying mines, and traffic would halt and what a disaster it would be. Any response from Iran tonight?
Well, Iran's not backing down. Today, Iran launched a barrage of missiles as part of a major war game aimed at mock enemy bases. But this is a delicate dance for the US. They don't want to provoke Iran, but they want to have everything ready in case Iran does something dangerous. So tensions do indeed remain high tonight.

Look at the deepest reds on the map: 45 states with temperatures 90 and above, and as you can see, so many in triple digits tonight. And this evening, imagine going through all this with no power after those deadly storms.
No fans, no AC, no refrigerator in all of this. Tonight, two million customers from Illinois to North Carolina to New Jersey, still without power. Day three without power; local malls have turned into de facto relief centers.
The Westfield Montgomery Mall, very packed with people just trying to stay cool and desperate for a charge.
All they need is a little juice. We've got all of the floor outlets, anywhere here along the wall, every single one is taken.
I'm trying to charge my laptop and my phone and do some work.

It is a banner day for the resurgent US auto industry.
Less than two years after coming out of bankruptcy, General Motors announced today it is adding 4,000 American jobs.
According to the experts, GM's move today could create a ripple effect of 28,000 additional jobs.
This is a good example of a large company hiring thousands of people that results in smaller companies being able to offer jobs to hundreds of people.
GM got close to a $50 billion lifeline from taxpayers that's kept them alive since 2008.
So far the company has paid back almost half that.
And today's announcement puts GM in a much better position to pay back every cent of your money.

feud (確執)

The raid has netted a treasure trove of intelligence.
But the operation has also ignited a growing feud between Pakistan and the US.
Seeing it as a gross violation, now they're firing back refusing a long list of American demands.
Access to Bin Laden's compound for another search: request denied.
Immediate access to Bin Laden's three wives and eight children now in Pakistani custody: request denied.
The identities of Pakistani intelligence agents suspected of sheltering Bin Laden: again, request denied.
There are divisions inside the Pakistani government over what concessions, if any, to make to the US.
Some officials here expressing worry the relationship could be irreparably damaged.

Imagine even trying to secure the rail system in the US.
140,000 miles of freight and passenger track, 3,100 train and transit stations.
Over 4 billion passenger rail trips last year.
Is anyone checking the rails on a regular basis?
We rode Amtrack up the heavily traveled Northeast Corridor, where we saw workers inspecting the tracks.
But what about the wide open spaces of this country?
40% of the rail lines have no automatic monitoring systems.
They are supposed to be inspected at least twice a week.
Most of the time the railroad is unprotected, for hundreds and hundreds of miles at a stretch.
Officials are promising heightened vigilance, but they have a lot of ground to cover.

scribble (書きつける)

President Reagan's secret stash of wisdom scribbled on his index cards.
A new display unveiled at the Regan Library, a notebook brimming with index cards, quotations in Reagan's handwriting.
His personal library of words for speeches to help you live.
President Kennedy wrote on the day of his death that history had called this generation of Americans to be watchmen on the walls of world freedom.
He liked to laugh, President Lincoln, he said, "If I couldn't laugh, I couldn't stand this job for 15 minutes."
One of my favorite quotations about age comes from Thomas Jefferson.
He said that we should never judge a president by his age, only by his work.
And ever since he told me that, I've stopped worrying.

Well tonight, Prince William and Kate are getting high marks in the UK for their wedding.
Sure, at 35 million dollars it was a staggeringly expensive affair, but the boost to tourism was far greater than that.
The biggest boost of all though may have been to the royal family itself.
In a poll released today by The Times of London, 73% said Kate, now the Duchess of Cambridge, will help revitalize the royal family.
It's a sentiment we found echoed on the streets of London.
I think young people can relate to them a little bit more.
Not everyone in Britain sees it that way.
At the end of the day, 21st century British monarchy is nothing but a rolling media road show selling nothing but itself.
But the British seem to understand that.
And most are more than happy to live surrounded by a living history.

fairy tale (おとぎ話)

And now here in London,
the city has been transformed into a kind of wedding command center, electrified by a secret rehearsal with the bride and groom tonight.
They slipped into the abbey through a side door.
Post rehearsal, the paparazzi caught a very happy bride and groom driving away.
In 36 hours, they'll be back with two billion people watching, doing this for real.
I'm happy. Very exciting.
I think it's a little bit of a historical moment.
Historic, because Kate's what they call a commoner, no blue blood.
Her mom's family were coal miners.
From coal mining to future Queen of England, I mean, it's an astonishing story.
It is a fairy tale frankly.
